Laser treatment can be confusing.

There are different types of lasers, different wavelengths and different types of light-based treatment. The treatment used for acne may be very different from one used for pigmentation, redness or skin resurfacing.

Alma Harmony brings several of these technologies together within one platform.

At Smooth Dimensions in Great Dunmow, the Harmony platform is used for a range of laser and IPL skin treatments. Your treatment is selected following consultation and assessment of your skin.

What is Alma Harmony?

Alma Harmony is an award winning advanced aesthetic treatment platform developed by Alma.

It combines several types of laser and light-based technology within one system. It includes:

  • IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
  • Non-ablative laser
  • Q-switched laser
  • Fractional ablative laser technology

Each technology interacts with the skin in a different way.

Some can target pigment. Others are designed for redness and visible vessels. Some work deeper within the skin to support collagen production, while fractional resurfacing treatments focus more strongly on skin renewal and texture.

This means treatment can be matched more closely to the concern being addressed.

What skin concerns can Alma Harmony treat?

Acne and acne scarring

Acne is not always simply a case of occasional spots.

It can include active breakouts, excess oil, congestion and inflammation. Some people also develop changes in texture or scarring after acne has settled.

Smooth Dimensions uses ClearSkin Pro for suitable patients with active acne. This acne laser treatment technology treats acne vulgaris, acne scars and photoaged skin.

IPL may also form part of an acne treatment plan where appropriate.

The approach will depend on what is happening with your skin. Active acne and established acne scarring are different concerns and may require different treatments.

Pigmentation and sun damage

Pigmentation can appear as individual brown spots, freckles, sun spots or more widespread unevenness in skin tone.

It can also have different causes.

Sun exposure is common, but hormonal changes, inflammation and previous acne can also contribute to pigmentation.

Laser treatment for pigmentation in Essex

Harmony offers different laser pigmentation treatment technologies that can be used to treat your pigmentation concerns.

At Smooth Dimensions, ClearLift Pro or Iris Dye-VL IPL may be selected depending on the type of pigmentation being treated.

Having a laser consultation and assessment matters because not all pigmentation should be treated in the same way.

Rosacea, redness and visible vessels

IPL treatment for rosacea

Facial redness can take several forms.

You may notice persistent redness across the cheeks or nose. You may experience flushing. Small thread veins or broken capillaries can also become more noticeable over time.

Smooth Dimensions uses Iris Dye-VL IPL for suitable redness and vascular concerns.

IPL is not technically a laser. It uses pulses of light across a range of wavelengths.

For patients who would like rosacea and redness treatment, it is also important to understand what treatment can and cannot do.

Rosacea is a long-term condition. IPL does not cure it. Treatment can, however, help reduce visible redness, flushing and superficial vessels in suitable patients.

Ongoing skincare, sun protection and managing known triggers may also form part of the longer-term approach.

Acne scars, texture and laser resurfacing

SupErb laser resurfacing treatment improves photoaged and sun damaged skin, pigmented lesions and scars, including acne scars.

Resurfacing is a more intensive approach than some other Harmony treatments. Recovery and aftercare therefore need to be considered as part of the treatment plan.

It is also important to distinguish between active acne and acne scarring.

Smooth Dimensions treats active acne separately. Resurfacing is more relevant when texture or established scarring is the concern.

Skin rejuvenation and signs of ageing

Not everyone comes to the clinic with one specific concern.

Sometimes the changes are more general.

Skin may look duller than it used to. Texture can become less even. Fine lines may become more noticeable. There may also be a combination of mild pigmentation, redness, sun damage and reduced firmness.

This is where Harmony BioBoost can be particularly useful.

BioBoost is not a separate laser applicator or one fixed treatment. It uses appropriate technologies from the Harmony platform to create a personalised skin rejuvenation treatment.

BioBoost offers biostimulation to support the skin’s natural healing processes and encourage collagen and elastin production.

At Smooth Dimensions, laser skin rejuvenation is selected based on our patients individual skin concerns which we identify during consultation. This allows different aspects of skin quality to be addressed within the same rejuvenation programme

The focus is on your skin health, including tone, texture, radiance and firmness.

How is an Alma Harmony treatment plan created?

Treatment begins with a consultation.

Your practitioner will discuss what you would like to improve and assess your skin. Your medical history, previous treatments and suitability for laser or IPL also need to be considered.

A patch test may be required before treatment.

Smooth Dimensions also offers Alma IQ skin analysis. This can provide additional information about the skin and support treatment planning.

Alma IQ skin Analysis

We will cover Alma IQ in more detail in a separate guide because it is not limited to Harmony treatment. Skin analysis can also play a role when considering skincare, Alma PrimeX and other aesthetic treatments.

How many Alma Harmony treatments will I need?

There is no single answer.

The number of sessions depends on the concern being treated, the technology used and how your skin responds.

For example, a course used for acne will not necessarily follow the same treatment plan as laser resurfacing.

Smooth Dimensions currently offers treatment courses for concerns including acne, pigmentation, rosacea and skin rejuvenation. The exact course can be discussed once your skin has been assessed.

Some treatments may also benefit from maintenance over time.

Is there downtime after Alma Harmony treatment?

Downtime varies considerably.

Some Harmony treatments are designed to involve relatively little disruption to normal activities.

Others are more intensive.

Laser resurfacing, for example, creates a greater controlled response within the skin than some IPL or non-ablative treatments. Redness, sensitivity and visible recovery are therefore more likely.

BioBoost can also vary because the treatment is personalised and may combine different Harmony technologies.

Your practitioner will explain what you are likely to experience before treatment.

Are there risks or limitations?

Laser and IPL treatment will not be suitable for every person or every skin concern.

Temporary redness, warmth, swelling or sensitivity may occur. Some treatments can also cause temporary darkening of pigmentation before it begins to fade.

There is also a risk of unwanted pigment changes with energy-based treatments. Skin type, recent sun exposure, tanning and the condition being treated all need to be considered.

Results vary too.

Treatment cannot stop the natural ageing process. It cannot guarantee that acne, pigmentation or redness will never return.

Some concerns require ongoing management rather than a one-off treatment.

This is why assessment, realistic expectations and appropriate aftercare are important.

What results can Alma Harmony achieve?

The result depends on why you are having treatment.

before and after acne treatment with Alma harmony
  • For someone with acne, improvement may mean fewer active breakouts and clearer-looking skin.
  • A pigmentation treatment may aim to reduce visible areas of excess pigment.
  • For rosacea-related redness, the objective may be a reduction in visible vessels or flushing.
  • Laser resurfacing focuses more strongly on skin texture
  • BioBoost is designed for broader improvements in skin quality and rejuvenation.
