Introduction
Teeth Grinding Treatment in Essex
Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, can place excessive pressure on the jaw muscles and teeth. Some people grind during sleep, while others repeatedly clench their jaw throughout the day without realising it.
Treatment Overview
What Causes Teeth Grinding and Jaw Clenching?
Overactive masseter muscles can contribute to jaw tension, clenching or grinding. Injectable treatment using botulinum toxin may be considered to improve symptoms following an individual consultation and prescribing assessment.
Symptoms may include jaw tension, aching facial muscles, headaches, worn teeth, tooth sensitivity or discomfort around the jaw and ears. Smooth Dimensions does not diagnose dental damage. You should also see a dentist if you have worn, chipped or sensitive teeth, broken fillings, jaw pain or suspected night-time grinding.

How it works
How Does Masseter Treatment Work?
The masseter muscles are the strong muscles positioned at either side of the jaw. They help you bite and chew but can become enlarged or overactive in people who regularly grind their teeth or clench their jaw.
Treatment involves a prescription-only medicine containing botulinum toxin, which is more widely associated with the brand name Botox. Small amounts are administered into the masseter muscles to temporarily reduce excessive muscle activity.
The aim is to ease jaw tension and reduce the force of clenching while preserving normal facial movement and everyday jaw function.
What Are the Benefits of Teeth Grinding Treatment?
Depending on your symptoms and suitability, masseter treatment may help:
Reduce excessive jaw muscle activity
Relieve jaw tension and muscular fatigue
Reduce the force of teeth grinding or clenching
Ease headaches associated with jaw tension
Make the jaw feel less tight or overworked
Soften a square or bulky lower jaw caused by enlarged masseter muscles
Jawline softening and facial slimming can occur as the treated muscles gradually reduce in size. This is a secondary effect and varies between patients.
Consultation
Your Consultation
Your consultation will include a review of your symptoms, medical history, medication and previous injectable treatments. Your practitioner will assess the strength and size of your masseter muscles and ask about symptoms such as clenching, grinding, jaw tension and headaches.
The potential benefits, limitations, side effects and alternative management options will be discussed. Treatment will only be offered when it is considered appropriate following an individual assessment and prescription.

The Treatment Process
What happens during treatment?
The jaw area will be cleaned before treatment is administered into specific points within the masseter muscles. The appointment takes approximately 30 minutes.
Most patients experience only brief discomfort during the injections. There is usually minimal downtime, although temporary redness, tenderness, swelling or bruising may occur around the treatment areas.

When will I see results?
Results do not appear immediately. You may begin to notice reduced jaw tension or clenching over the following days, with the effect continuing to develop during the first few weeks.
Results typically last between three and six months. Muscle activity gradually returns as the effects wear off, and further treatment may be considered following reassessment.
