Introduction
Laser Pigmentation Treatment Essex
Laser and IPL treatment may help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, sun spots, age spots, freckles, dark marks and uneven pigmentation. Because pigmentation can have different causes and occur at different depths within the skin, your treatment will be selected following a consultation, skin analysis and patch test.
Treatment Overview
What causes pigmentation and hyperpigmentation?
Pigmentation gives the skin its natural colour. Hyperpigmentation develops when excess melanin causes an area to appear darker than the surrounding skin.
This may be associated with:
- Sun exposure and sun damage
- Age spots and sun spots
- Freckles
- Hormonal changes
- Melasma
- Inflammation or previous acne
- Skin injury
- Genetics
- The natural ageing process
Pigmentation can appear as individual brown or dark spots, larger patches or a more general unevenness in skin tone.

How it works
How does Laser Pigmentation Treatment work?
Laser and IPL treatments use controlled light energy to target excess pigment within the skin. The melanin absorbs the energy, causing the unwanted pigment to break down so it can gradually be cleared through the body’s natural processes.
At Smooth Dimensions, treatment may be delivered using ClearLift Pro or Iris Dye-VL IPL on the Alma Harmony platform.
Iris Dye-VL may be selected for superficial visible pigmentation, including sun spots, age spots and freckles. ClearLift Pro uses Q-switched laser technology and may be considered when pigmentation occurs at a different depth or requires a more targeted approach.
Your practitioner may use one technology or recommend a personalised treatment plan based on the pigmentation being treated.
What can Pigmentation Treatment help improve?
Depending on your skin and the cause of the pigmentation, treatment may help improve the appearance of:
Uneven-looking skin tone
Sun spots and age spots
Freckles
Brown or dark spots
Uneven facial pigmentation
Hyperpigmentation
Sun-damaged skin
Post-inflammatory pigmentation
Dark marks left after acne
Not every brown or pigmented mark is suitable for cosmetic laser treatment. Any lesion that is new, changing, irregular or medically concerning should be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional before treatment.
Can laser be used to treat melasma?
ClearLift Pro may be considered for some patients with melasma, but treatment must be planned carefully.
Melasma is a complex and often recurring form of pigmentation that may be influenced by hormones, sun exposure, heat and other factors. Laser treatment may form part of a wider management plan, but it cannot guarantee that melasma will be permanently removed.
Consultation
Your pigmentation consultation
Your practitioner will assess the colour, pattern, likely cause and depth of the pigmentation. This helps determine whether ClearLift Pro, Iris Dye-VL IPL or another treatment approach is most suitable.
Depending on the cause of your pigmentation, you may also be advised to follow a personalised ZO Skin Health programme and to use daily broad-spectrum SPF.

The Treatment Process
What happens during treatment?
Your skin will be cleansed before the selected laser or IPL applicator is passed across the treatment area.
The sensation will depend on the technology used. You may experience warmth, tingling or a light snapping sensation. Treatment settings will be selected according to your skin type, pigmentation and patch-test response.
Following IPL treatment, visible pigmentation may initially become darker before gradually fading or flaking away. Temporary redness, warmth or mild sensitivity can also occur.
You will receive personalised aftercare advice, including guidance on skincare, sun exposure and SPF.

When will I see results?
Pigmentation does not usually disappear immediately. Changes develop as the targeted pigment gradually clears following treatment.
A course is generally recommended, although the number of sessions will depend on the type, depth and extent of pigmentation and your individual response.
Existing pigmentation may improve, but new pigmentation can develop following further sun exposure, inflammation or hormonal changes. Daily SPF and appropriate skincare are therefore important for maintaining results.
